Study Highlights Scotland’s Renewable Energy Advantages

A recently published, independent report has highlighted the “significant comparative advantage” enjoyed by Scotland, in terms of its renewable energy potential. According to the report, Scotland's location, its natural resources, research and development and manufacturing base give it a key advantage in the development of clean energy.
The report suggests that:

  • Scotland’s total carbon emissions could be reduced by approximately 3% by the provision of one additional gigawatt of onshore or offshore wind capacity
  • Scotland’s ability to cope with the potential expansion in renewable energy will be heavily dependent on the electricity grid infrastructure
  • if carbon capture and storage was shown to be viable on a commercial scale, a network in the Firth of Forth could capture approximately one third of Scotland's onshore carbon emissions.

Jim Mather, the Energy Minister, said the study revealed that carbon capture could have a significant positive impact in Scotland once it becomes fully operational. He added that Scotland was taking a global lead in combating climate change and that the Scottish Government was working hard with its UK partners to develop alternative energy technologies and new economic opportunities.
